13th Oct - Baños Day 4

Was due to leave Baños today but I made an executive decision. Think I'm biting off more than I chew trying to climb the Cotopaxi mountain so I'll stay an extra few hours here in Baños then head to La Tacunga tonight and on to Quilotoa in the morning. There I can spend 3 nights instead of 2 and really enjoy what's supposed to be an amazing area. Then again, I might hate it and need to change the plan again!

The 3 Dutchies in my room are all good lads, Hans, Florian and Martijn. And all very tall obviously! Florian had been up some path near the top of the volcano a couple of days ago and the lads were going to hike it today. Sounded like a plan to me! I deposited my final Galapagos payment and went back for breakfast. After breakfast (and after over an hour of expert pottering by all of us) we finally left for the hike. Then we'd to turn around cos we'd forgotten our lunch in the hostel. Then the taxi driver got lost so despite hoping to start the hike around 10.30, we eventually got going around 12.30. Next came a 2.5 hr uphill hike. And I mean uphill. It was v v steep. And there were flat bits for about 25 or 30 seconds in total. This was very very hard.
At least I saw Martijn's Peter Crouch impression - he said he was whacking a fly or something but not sure I believe him!

There it is!

Just as we got to the top of the mountain a huge cloud came in so we could see nothing! Pretty disappointing really!

There was a beautiful hostel at the top though:

Reckon they could have filmed Trainspotting around here!

We'd about 20 mins at the top and then had to turn around and race down to catch our taxi. Sadly my knee was killing me and I found it tough work on the descent, but we all made it in the end.

I did have time for a quick Spanish lesson on the way down:

I decided to change my plan, instead of leaving tonight, I'll just catch the early bus tomorrow morning instead. Means that after such a tough hike, I can have the massage I reckoned I'd earned! So reception recommended a place that does a Swedish massage. No idea what separates it from a regular massage but it was mighty! Felt great after it!

Met up with the sound Dutchies again and we all went out for dinner. Went to this lovely looking place named "Granny's House" - what could go wrong! Well everything actually! Should have smelt a rat when my red wine came out chilled! Then when I quizzed her on it, she looked at me as if I was mad - "did you not want it chilled?" Well of course I bloody didn't! Then I'd the most disgusting pizza of my life for main. Frustrating, especially when the standard of food was so good everywhere else in the town! Great front doors on the restaurant though, I made them look even better:

Looking good

Looking even better

There were a couple of Danish girls and an English lad at the next table and they were up for pints and as I hadn't had a beer for nearly a week I said I'd head along. They were meeting some other people who were not the most interesting. I had little in common with the lad from Nebraska with the mullet for example. Though one of the Danish girls was friendly and taught me some Danish. I then asked to get a photo with her and she said fine. Then she pulled this ridiculous face. Why do people do that? The only photo I have with someone I get on with and they make themselves look ridiculous! And then she was all embarrassed when I said I might put it up on my blog. Well here's the photo of me and Julie Daugbjerg Jakobsen from Aarhus in Denmark:
